HOME USE MACHINES

There are hundreds of different types, styles, and brands of Home-Use Sewing, Serging, and Knitting machines. These machines, particularly if manufactured in the past 30 years, are multi-purpose machines designed to be versatile and perform several different functions.

Basically, there are three types of Home-Use Sewing Machines:

The DROP-IN BOBBIN MACHINE
THE FRONT-LOADING BOBBIN MACHINE
THE SIDE-LOADING MACHINE. A detailed description of these types follows:

The DROP-IN BOBBIN MACHINE may have front or rear loading. These machines are usually deluxe models and include:

Singer Touch & Sew (front load)
Singer Slant Needle (front load)
Elna machines (rear load)
Kenmore machines, only some models

All of these machines run smoothly with little or no vibration, are easy to insert the bobbin, depend greatly on tension adjustment, and tend to be expensive because of the bobbin case engineering.

The FRONT-LOADING BOBBIN MACHINES all have a removable bobbin case and include

Bernina machines (front loading)
Pfaff machines (front loading)
Viking (front loading)
Japanese imports (front loading), only some models

All of these machines can produce above average stitches. Some machines use a oscillating hook and some are rotary hook systems.

The SIDE-LOADING BOBBIN MACHINES all have a removable bobbin case and include

Necchi machines (side loading)
Kenmore machines (side loading), some models
Japanese imports (side loading), most models

All of these machines tend to vibrate more than the front and top loading styles... but produce excellent stitches.

CAUTION- Home use machines are NOT designed for heavy duty work and frequently go out of adjustment if abused in any way.
